“Austrian Soldier” by Feliks Szynalewski

Feliks Szynalewski was born in Kraków on 11 May 1825. During the period 1835–1837 he completed two classes of primary school for boys. Between 1837–1841 he attended three classes at St. Anna Middle School, and then he began to study at the Kraków School of Drawing and Painting. He was taught to draw by Jan Nepomucen Głowacki and Jan Nepomucen Bizański, to paint by Wojciech Korneli Stattler, and sculpture by Karol Ceptowski. During his studies, Szynalewski earned his wages by making lithographies.

The objects shown in the painting are props from Jan Matejko’s School of Historical Painting. Among the props painted by Lisiewicz, one can recognize the gilded mace presented on our website, which is still in the collection of the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (Rz A 107).

We have sparse information about the artist’s life. What is known is that in 1792 he lived at Piwna Street in Warsaw. Thanks to the help of his father, he managed to find his way into the court of King Stanisław August Poniatowski.

At the end of the 19th century, Stanisławski made numerous artistic journeys. He visited Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. He also travelled many times to his homeland: Ukraine.

“Landscape with staffage” by Salvator Rosa

Salvator Rosa painted portraits, battle, mythological, and religious scenes, as well as imaginary landscapes. In Rosa’s landscapes, human and animal staffage plays a subordinate role in the composition, whose disturbing, poetic mood is evoked by representations of rocks, twisted trees, and ancient ruins.

The portrait was based on the lithographic image of Franciszek Siarczyński (1758–1829) – a priest, historian, geographer, journalist, librarian and first director of the National Ossoliński Institute in Lviv.

“Portrait of a man” by Ján Kupecký

Ján Kupecký was born in 1666 or 1667 into the family of a weaver in Pezinok, on the territory of today’s Slovakia. To avoid having to learn weaving, which his father insisted on, the young man ran away from home at the age of 15. In the castle of Holíč, belonging to Count Adam Czabor of Czabor (d. 1691), he met the Swiss painter Benedict Klaus, who was employed as a conservator in the residence.

“Double portrait of the Markowski married couple” by Józef Peszka

The present portrait depicts the Markowski married couple: Józef and Maria née Langelot. The painting was created during the second period of Peszka’s artistic activity in Kraków (from 1813). Józef Markowski (1758–1829), portrayed together with his wife, was one of the most important Polish scientists of that time. “Model worker” by Andrzej Wróblewski

The portrait entitled Model worker represents a man dressed in blue work clothes with the collar of a white shirt poking out. The model is rendered en trois quarts. His short hair is neatly combed, smoothly clinging to the head, and his face seems emotionless.

“Study of a boy’s nude figure” by Tadeusz Okoń

The present, a painterly study of a boy’s nude figure was created by Tadeusz Okoń (1872 – 1957) during his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków. Okoń was educated at the School of Fine Arts in 1887–1896 under the tutelage of Jan Matejko, Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, Leopold Loeffler and Teodor Axentowicz. He continued his education at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (1896), the Munich Academy of Fine Arts (1896–1898) and at the Académie Colarossi in Paris (1898–1900).

“Study of a nude male figure with a fig leaf” by Alfons Dunin-Borkowski

Alfons Borkowski (1850–1918), after finishing studies at the Wojciech Gerson School of Drawing in Warsaw (1876–1879), continued his education at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków, where in 1879–1887 he studied under Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, Leopold Loeffler and from 1882 with Jan Matejko for three years. The artist’s talent was already appreciated during his studies.

“Study of the nude figure of a sitting woman” by Bronisława Galiczanka

Little is known about the life and artistic work of Bronisława Galiczanka (Bronisława Olga Galica) and her achievements are limited to a few student works. She was born in Czertez near Sanok in 1902. She was registered as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków during the years 1924–1928. She was educated in the studios of Władysław Jarocki and Fryderyk Pautsch, and her work was then recognized and awarded...

“Study of Laocoon’s head” by Jan Bukowski

Jan Bukowski (1873–1943) according to the Dictionary of Polish Artists, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków during the period 1893–1900. He attended the workshops of such famous artists as Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, Teodor Axentowicz, Leon Wyczółkowski and Jacek Malczewski. The presented drawing is signed with the name and surname of the author and dated by him to 1892.

Ferdynand Bryll, painter, portraitist, conservator and illustrator, was born in 1863 in Kraków. During the period 1876–1884 he studied at the Kraków School of Fine Arts. In the course of his studies, in 1882, at the request of Jan Matejko, he assisted Henryk Rodakowski during his work on the frieze in the parliamentary chamber in Lviv. Even before his studies, he learned towards portrait painting at the studio of Andrzej Grabowski, which opened in Kraków in 1855.
