The statue is modelled on a portrait painted in 1737 by Louis de Silvestre, the court painter of Augustus III. The sculpture was designed by Johann Joachim Kändler in 1740, on the request of Heinrich, Count von Brühl; the sculpting work was completed in the autumn of 1741 and was carried out in cooperation with Johann Friedrich Eberlein and with the assistance of Johann Gottlieb Ehder.
more The statue depicts the king standing on a square pedestal decorated with flowers. He stands in a contrapposto pose and wears the traditional costume of a Polish nobleman. His right hand rests on his hip and in his left hand he holds a cap with fur trim. He wears a full-length kontusz (a long robe worn by the Polish gentry) with a turndown collar and slit sleeves rolled up. He also wears a sash around his waist. Under the kontusz, a żupan (a traditional dress of Polish noblemen) is visible and a shirt fastened with a large button. At his left side, there is a sabre on an ornamented belt (the sabre was baked separately and then fastened with a metal pin). The King wears the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck and a sash of the Order of the White Eagle across his chest with the star of the Order on his right side.
