This painting depicts the image of Stefan Bogusław Janota Bzowski known by the name of Bogusław. He was the son of Kazimierz and Marjanna née Dąbski, born in 1821 in Gruszów, who died in 1911 in Kraków. He was buried with his wife at the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków. He managed estates in the villages of Droginia, Radwan and Buk. After autonomy had been granted to Galicia, he served as the first marshal of the District Council in Myślenice. At his own initiative, the District Savings Bank was established in this city. In 1854, he married Leonia, Countess Stadnicka, with whom he had nine children.
Bogusław Janota Bzowski was portrayed as a middle-aged man with a high forehead and bushy moustache. He is dressed in light trousers, a black jacket and a vest, from under which a white shirt is visible, tied at the neck with a black bow tie. Sitting on a chair covered with red cloth, facing the viewer, the left hand falls on the knee, while the right hand rests on an open book lying on the table. On the pages of the book you can read the inscription: “Great! Council Department Po (...) As a result of the command of 16 December, Year ~ 871, image painted Strzegocki”. Behind the figure, an interior covered with wood with rococo ornamental details is visible. On the reverse of the picture a sticky note was affixed: “Bogusław Janota Bzowski born in 1821, died in Kraków in 1911. President of the District Council in Myślenice, owner of Droginia, Radwan Pysznica estates, etc. Oil portrait by the painter Bryla”. The inscription on the face of the work, however, contradicts Bryla’s status at the author; on its basis, the creation of the portrait was dated back to 1871. During World War II, the picture was cut from the frames and hidden, thanks to which it avoided destruction and looting. It was donated to the museum collections in 2009 by the grandson of the last owner of Kazimierz Janota Bzowski’s manor house in Droginia. In 2010, it underwent thorough maintenance. The portrait was fitted into a stylized frame made by the Art Deco studio in Chrzanów and now complements the exhibition of the living room in the manor house of Droginia.
