Portrait of Kazimierz Janota Bzowski (the last owner of the Droginia estate), painted by Stanisław Janowski in 1927. The painting belonged to the Janota Bzowski family from Droginia, a village near Kraków. It was donated to the museum by Witold Nekanda Trepka.
The painting depicts the frontal image of an elderly man seated – Kazimierz Janota Bzowski. The figure is painted en face, with one arm resting on the backrest of the armchair. Against the background of a library bookcase, the man sits in an Empire style armchair, dressed in a black suit and a white shirt with a dark tie. The composition is kept in a narrow subdued colour range with a yellow accent on the chair cover. The portrait was painted with thin layers of paint, without clearly visible brush strokes. It is characterized by delicate chiaroscuro modelling. Painted on a canvas of medium thickness, standard weave.
A note was stuck to the reverse, written with a typewriter, with information about the person depicted in the portrait: “Kazimierz Janota Bzowski, born in Pieniążkowice in Nowy Targ district in 1861, died in Kraków in 1945; the owner of the Droginia, Zasań and Lipniki estates in the district of Myślenice. President of the District Council in Myślenice. Deputy to the Diet of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. President of the Agricultural Association in Myślenice. The oil painting was created around 1935 by the painter Stanisław Janowski.”
The painting was dated on the basis of the signature on the front of the painting. It was acquired by the museum collection in 2009; in the same year, it underwent comprehensive conservation. The portrait, in a stylized frame made by an “Art Deco” studio in Chrzanów, now complements the exhibition of the study room in the manor house of Droginia. The author of the portrait, Stanisław Janowski, was born on 6 October 1866 in Kraków, where he also died on 23 February 1942. The elder brother of the painter of manors and manor houses, Bronisława Rychter Janowska, and his first art teacher. In 1901 he married Gabriela Zapolska, whom he loved with all his heart. After a few years, the marriage fell apart. Recognized as a talented painter of portraits, landscapes, as well as battle and genre scenes, he also illustrated books, created scenography and lectured in choreography.
