more The City Council, the mayor and his deputy played a significant role in the development and functioning of the city. The City Council had the right to issue statutes of guilds. One of the exceptionally important documents, which has been preserved to our times and was issued by the City Council of Koszyce, is the Statute of the Grand (Common) Guild of 3 June 1577. A document of this rank had to be approved by the king. On 23 February 1578, King Stefan Batory confirmed the Statute of the Grand Guild of Koszyce. This document has also been preserved and is presented on our website.
The mayor, his deputies and city councillors also dealt with current affairs of the city: settling accounts with craftsmen, collecting and announcing universals (i.e. proclamations), overseeing their implementation, and maintaining cooperation with the customs house in Wawrzeńczyce. This is confirmed by the documents preserved in the Princes Czartoryski Library in Kraków. They were confirmed with a signature and seal. The seal made them more credible, elevated their rank. A seal from in green wax dating back to 1528 and seal impressions on seven documents have been preserved.
