The czuha played a special role in the outfit of the Lemkos: it symbolised wealth and prestige. The czuha was obligatorily worn to Orthodox church, on more important festivals — even in the summer, as well as for weddings (even if one had to borrow it). It was a kind of a voluminous coat made of brown domestic cloth, which for other Lemkos was indicative of its owner’s origin. Czuhas differed in their shape and decoration of the collar. They were worn on the shoulders, exactly like a cloak. And their sleeves, frequently sewn together at the bottom, substituted pockets, while a large rectangular collar functioned as a hood in bad weather.
The exhibit comes from Western Lemkivshchyna. What deserves special attention is the collar and sleeves decorated with three horizontal white stripes and white tassels (the so-called toroky), being the distinguishing feature of this region.
The edges of the coat are trimmed with white and brown herringbone braided cord. From the same cord the fastener in the form of a loop hooked on a brass button was made. On both shoulders there are appliqués of white and red pieces of cloth.
The czuha is a real rarity in museum collections.
