As a result of a competition, the costume and stage design for Karol Szymanowski's ballet, Harnasie, was prepared by Irena Lorentowicz, a stage designer and painter, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
The costume design, including the drawings and models, has been exhibited since 24 April 1936 in the Orbis halls, located near the Opera building. For her stage design for the mentioned performance, Irena Lorentowicz won first prize in the Grand l'Opera competition and a five-year scholarship from the French government. Unfortunately, the scenery for Harnasie burned in September 1936 in a fire at the Paris Opera building.
In her memoires entitled Oczarowanie [Fascination], Irena Lorentowicz wrote about her work on the costume design: “I would spend a lot of time searching for highlander woodcuts and paintings on glass, and I tried to model iconographic details after characteristic ornamentation of the old highlander costume, synthetically stylising it in the fashionable Schillerian Neorealist manner. Each highlander in a tall highland robber hat seemed at that time to be copied from some work made by Skoczylas, who drew upon the roots of a glass painting – the same sources. In vain did I look for a different perspective on these issues and engrossed in the Polish highland culture and brainwashed with the poetics of the old legend, I did not notice how fast the time had passed.“
In 1976, Irena Lorentowicz gave the complete costume design to the National Museum in Kraków. This collection is permanently exhibited at the Karol Szymanowski Museum in the “Atma“ Villa.
