On 8 May 1933, on a single-seat aircraft of the Polish construction RWD-5bis (signs SP-AJU), rebuilt from a tourist plane, Capt. Pilot Stanisław Skarżyński was the first Pole to fly across the Atlantic Ocean: from the west coast of Africa (Saint Louis in Senegal) to Maceió in Brazil. He started his flight on 7 May at 11 PM. The flight lasted twenty hours and thirty minutes, of which seventeen hours and fifteen minutes were over the ocean. As a result of his 3,582 km flight, Skarżyński established an international distance record in class II of tourist airplanes, with an empty weight of up to 450 kg. Among other things, the fact that he performed the flight in a suit, not in a pilot's suit, became legendary. For his feat, in 1936 he received the Medal of Louis Blériot, awarded for records (speed, ceiling, flight distance) in light aviation, from the International Aviation Federation (FAI).
The flight over the southern Atlantic was a stage on the Warsaw-Rio de Janeiro route, which was covered between 27 April and 24 June 1933. Its length was 17,885 km. In Brazil, he also visited other cities and was enthusiastically welcomed by their inhabitants, especially the Polish communities. He then flew to his compatriots in Buenos Aires. He returned to Europe with his ‘record-breaking’ plane, and before he flew from Boulogne in France to Warsaw (with a stopover at Lublinek Airport, where he was greeted by his wife), he had ended his flight on 2 August 1933, after flying a total distance of 18 305 km. The silver platter was made to commemorate this flight and presents the silhouette of the RWD-5bis aircraft and a map with the flight route. It belonged to Stanisław Skarżyński, who handed it over after the record flight.
