more The oldest clock in the collection of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków is a tabletop turret clock. The name of this type of originates comes from their form, which resembles the shapes of a miniature church tower. The rectangular, brass housing of the clock mechanism was engraved, gilded and placed on a pedestal. The walls of the housing are enclosed by columns and the front wall features two clock faces: one for hours and the other for quarter hours. The clock is topped with a gallery and an openwork spire-steeple with pinnacles. Underneath it there are bells for striking on the hour and quarter hours, as well as a figurine of a lion. The whole construction is covered by a dome topped with a fox figurine.
The clock was probably made in 1599 – this date was engraved under one of the elements of the steeple. According to the custom which has survived to our times, successive clocksmiths engraved the dates of clock repairs and their initials or last name on the inner side of the housing.
The pendulum mounted on the outside of the housing was added later – it was invented in 1656 by a Dutch scholar, Christian Huygens.
