Limonite (a brown iron ore) is a fine-grained or cryptocrystalline mixture of iron oxides and hydroxides which used to be regarded as a separate mineral, but now is regarded as a type of rock.
It mainly consists of goethite, a mineral of the hydroxide class.
Limonite's name derives from the Greek word λειμωυ, meaning meadow, and is a reference to its common occurrence in the form of turf ores in wetlands.
It usually occurs as loose, sallow mass (turf ore, iron sand) or creates compact or porous aggregates (rock ore). Goethite sometimes takes the form of a crust, as well as stalactite, kidney-shaped, and nodule dripstones.
It can also be found in the form of concretion. Characteristic colours of goethite are yellow, dark brown, and black.
