The presented object is a trunk of a cycad — a fossil plant. Bennettitales (Cycadeoidopsida) is a class of extinct gymnosperms which could be found all over the world in the Mesozoic era. In Poland only several specimens of the silicified sprouts of these plants, which belong to the family of Cacadeoidaceae, are known.
The specimen was found in the 2nd half of the 19th century and was kept in the collection of the Physiographic Commission [Komisja Fizjograficzna]. It comes from an unidentified location in the Carpathian Mountains from a secondary deposit of the Cretaceous.
In 1893 it was marked as a new specimen by Marian Raciborski and was later described in his publication entitled Cycadeoidea Niedźwiedzkii Nov. Sp., Rozprawy Wydziału matematyczno-przyrodniczego Akademii Umiejętności w Krakowie, issued in 1893 (vol. XXVI).
