The mortar is decorated with a flat relief cartouche, on which there is a house mark and the monogram JR, belonging to Jan Radziwin, a doctor of medicine and philosophy, the owner of the pharmacy on the Warsaw Old Town Square. On the cartouche frieze, there is an inscription in capital letters: ANNO DOMINI 1615 ZVDAZ, indicating the time and place of the creation of the mortar. The letters ZVDAZ most probably (referring to: A. Stabrawa, Moździerze aptekarskie w Krakowskich zbiorach muzealnych [Apothecary mortars in the Kraków museum collections], Warsaw 1974) are a distorted abbreviation of the inscription ZV DANZIG, which appeared on the cannons cast in this period in Gdansk. It follows that the mortar was created in one of the workshops located in this city.
