Sneakers are usually an attribute of children’s games. The ones in the collection of Małopolska’s Virtual Museums are big (size 44!). Judging from the state of preservation, they were used by Karol Wojtyła many times when hiking.
His love for sport was inculcated in Karol by his brother, 14 years older Edmund, who played in a football team. Very often Karol accompanied him; however, due to the age difference he could not run on a football pitch.

His love for sport was inculcated in Karol by his brother, 14 years older Edmund, who played in a football team. Very often Karol accompanied him; however, due to the age difference he could not run on a football pitch. The elder brother made him a goalkeeper. There is a photograph preserved in the archive of the Museum depicting a team of almost 20-year-old men and a small Karol standing among them.
Football, swimming, hiking and skiing — those first experiences in Wadowice brought one of the most recognisable images of the Pope, wearing a white cassock on a mountain trail. Therefore, there are many traces of his sports and mountain fascinations in the collections of the Wadowice Museum.
Among the accounts given by people who knew Karol Wojtyła even in the Kraków period, stories about his modesty and lack of attachment to things (ragged, worn-out shoes) could be found.
The sneakers (it is not known if these were the exact ones) accompanied Wojtyła during many significant events — when he was summoned by Cardinal Wyszyński on 4 July 1958 he stopped a canoeing rally and appeared in the Kraków Curia in… ragged sneakers. A letter including Pope Pius XII’s order appointing Karol Wojtyła the suffragan bishop of Kraków was the reason for this meeting.
