Antoni Julian Gasper Gierowski was born on 4 July 1860 in Wielgomłyny in the Radomsko district. He was educated at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków in 1878–1883 and later at the Munich Academy. The painter died prematurely in 1888 after several years of struggling with tuberculosis. It is known that he stayed at spas of Merano in Italy and Gleichenberg in Austria. While still in college, in 1881, he received the second prize for drawing from the Kraków Society of Friends of Fine Arts. Probably the award-winning drawing is the boy’s portrait.
