Łukasz Surowiec’s activities focus on the area of important social problems such as exclusion, homelessness, and poverty. The artist explores the relationships within marginalized groups and the perception of their representatives by other members of society. He creates prototypes of radical social actions, thanks to which he interferes with the reality of people functioning outside the capitalist system.more
Łukasz Surowiec’s activities focus on the area of important social problems such as exclusion, homelessness, and poverty. The artist explores the relationships within marginalized groups and the perception of their representatives by other members of society. He creates prototypes of radical social actions, thanks to which he interferes with the reality of people functioning outside the capitalist system. In the project implemented in 2010–2014, Happy New Year, he worked with a group of homeless people from Katowice. He accompanied them with a camera in everyday life, collecting scrap metal, conversing, and even made plans with them to build a shared housing estate near Spodek. During the project, Waiting room, implemented in the Kraków Bunkier Sztuki (2013), Surowiec created an anarchic space, in which the rules of the social contract were suspended for two winter months. The homeless people living in the gallery tried to create their own rules of life and cooperation, not necessarily in line with the principles promoted by social welfare workers. The show, Clinic (2016), staged at Ratajskiego Square in Poznań, was a prototype of social action involving excluded, active alcoholics, who could not or did not want to take addiction treatment. The project space became a place of work for them: an event shared between patients (played by alcoholics) and medics (doctors, anthropologists, sociologists) and transmitted outside the walls of the premises.
Furthermore, works from the series Trolleys are part of the artist’s social interests. The installation is the result of reflection on the prototype of social activities: the exchange between Raw and a group of homeless from Bytom. In return for old, broken-down vehicles, used to transport scrap metal, the artist offered them new, functional trolleys. The only condition provided by the artist was the consent for making a given person a picture, presented later, together with a broken vehicle. The action proposed by Surowiec aimed to improve the living conditions of a specific group of people, and, at the same time, to extract their faces and names from the anonymous crowd of the excluded.

Łukasz Surowiec (born 1985) is a visual artist. He is the creator of objects, video works, interventions, and artistic situations. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków; he also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań and at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. He is the author of individual exhibitions, including: Happy New (CSW Kronika, Bytom, 2011), Swedish pigeons (Kalmar Konstmuseum in Kalmar, 2012), Dziady (Bunkier Sztuki Gallery of Contemporary Art, Kraków, 2013), Waiting room (CSW Znaki Czasu, Toruń, 2014), No one is afraid of dying (Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw, 2014). He has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions, including: Romantic manifestations (BWA Sokół, Nowy Sącz, 2014), Your city is a battlefield (Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, 2014), As you can see. Polish art today (Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, 2014), Critical Juncture (Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kochi, 2014), Je brûle Paris (Cité internationale des arts, Paris, 2015), Bread and roses. Artists versus class divisions (Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, 2016). He participated in 7th Berlin Biennale, with the project Berlin-Birkenau, which he also showed at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. He lives and works in Bytom.
