The project, Revitalisations, was implemented Wojciech Gilewicz in Sanok in 2007. The long-term marginalization of the city and its exclusion from comprehensive modernization projects prompted the artist to undertake his own, non-standard intervention, using the illusionistic potential of painting. The intention of the action was to repair the visual deficiencies of the urban fabric, to supplement its defects with the help of images, and by doing so, lead at least its temporary and provisional revitalization. During the artist’s several-week work in the public space of Sanok, pictorial mock-ups of reality covered the progressing degradation and neglect of buildings and streets. They replaced missing tiles of wall claddings, hid glaring dirt and lichen on elevations, filled plaster gaps, fitting perfectly into their shape.more

In turn, other artistic surrogates – like the one in the Bunkier Sztuki collection – appeared in the role of the missing borders of street flowerbeds. The artist showed the immense power of the painting medium being able to imitate reality perfectly. At the same time, he contradicted the sense of painting, because his interventions, discreetly improving appearance of the city, were often invisible to most random passers-by.
During the project, the artist wanted to encourage the inhabitants of Sanok to walk the streets of the city and carefully observe reality. He directed their attention to the amazing painting incursions in everyday surroundings, allowing them, in a way, to rediscover the city. In the BWA gallery in Sanok, which co-participated in the project, it was possible to obtain a plan of the distribution of the paintings and watch a film showing the artist at work. Currently, a partial representation allows us to gain insight into the project. This consists of a video recording telling us about the painting interventions carried out by the artist, as well as of those paintings that have been recovered from the city space after several months of exposure. The specific context of the creation of these non-typical paintings is evidenced by the damage and pollution accumulated on their surface. You can see them also on the paint layer of a green square that served as a substitute for the fencing that once surrounded a concrete flower pot. Only minor imperfections – dirt and bird droppings – reveal its connections with a project of significant social intentions, that deals with the subject of the situation in a peripheral city. Without them – and even despite their existence – transferred to the sterile interior of a gallery, the painting becomes an independent work, a minimalist exemplum of abstract art.

Wojciech Gilewicz (born 1974) is a painter, photographer, and the author of installations and video films. In his works, which are usually located at the interface between all of these disciplines, he takes up the problem of the blurring of the boundaries between reality and its representation in art. The reflection of the mechanisms governing our perception and reflection on the cultural determinants of our vision can be considered the leitmotiv of his creative work. This is accompanied by the desire to show how relative and fluid the human perception of the surrounding world is. He is a graduate of the Painting Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1999); he also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. He is the winner of numerous scholarships, such as the scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2011) and the Young Poland scholarship (2007). He has presented his works in individual exhibitions, including: City-Estate-Studio-Flat (CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Poland, 2001), Sale (BWA Awangarda Gallery, Wrocław, 2011), Workshop (Bunkier Sztuki Gallery of Contemporary Art, Kraków, 2012), Arcus (Zachęta Project Room, Warsaw, Poland, 2013), Painters’Painting (Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei, 2013), Rockaway (Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space Cuboids, New York, 2015), as well as the Fondation Deutsch de la Meurthe in Paris (2004), Contemporary Art Museum in Saint Louis (2008), Flux Factory, New York City (2012). He has also taken part in many group exhibitions, including: Love and democracy (CSW Łaźnia, Gdansk, 2006), Starting Point: Intrude Art & Life 366 (Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, 2008), Filling empty boxes (CSW Znaki Czasu, Toruń, 2011), Plain (The Hebrew Gallery, Tel Aviv, 2012), Collections (Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, 2016-2017). His works can be found in the collections of such institutions as: the Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgrade), Zendai Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai), the Museum of Bat Yam, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ivano-Frankivsk or Zachęta – National Art Gallery in Warsaw. He lives and works in Warsaw and New York.
