The work is a photographic documentation of a performance carried out by the artist in 1971. Fifteen prints, arranged in five rows, three in a row, step by step present actions involving a single paving stone. The work, with its roots in conceptualism, also has feminist and political connotations. A paving stone is commonly used as weapon in street protests. During the performance, the artist embraces, strokes and kisses the stone, treating it with great care, then wrapping it tightly in a straw net or throwing it vigorously.
Dóra Maurer (b. 1937)
Photography, installation, graphics, performance. Her works are based on analytical conceptual rules. In a series of photographs, she shows sets of movements related to servicing an object; the object in question determines the range of movements. She produces images and installations in which she tests the qualities of colour and space as well as their reception by the viewer.
